Mental Health Awareness Month: 3 Key Takeaways from Insider’s Health and Wellness Study

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Insider launched a new proprietary study to better understand how our audience prioritizes mental and physical health.

Key takeaways

  1. Following years of uncertainty and disruption, the relationship between mental and physical health is more defined, according to respondents, and imperative to overall well-being.

  2. There is a growing demand for health equity progress and continued education about what health equity means.

  3. Insider readers are highly in tune with wellness and consider mental health a crucial factor in job performance.

The dynamic duo: mental and physical health

Of those surveyed, 86% believe that mental health is part of physical health and establish routines that support this value. For example, the results show that nearly 70% of all readers consider personal hygiene an integral component of the “dynamic duo,” and, in turn, a majority noted becoming brand loyalists once they find hygiene products that work and align with their values.

Insider dug deeper to discover that the types of products they use in their routines make a difference. Our readers consciously make the effort to invest in brands that are sustainable, organic, and cruelty-free because they want their decisions to not only improve their well-being but also benefit the planet.

Growing demand for health equity

Insider readers are passionate about driving positive social change:

“Health equity is important because everyone should have the right to access health care regardless of race or ethnic background.”

Of those surveyed, 85% agree that health equity is important and this belief impacts how they consider brands and ultimately make purchasing decisions.

Insider’s newsroom is committed to covering equity and those driving forward progress in the industry:

Mental health is important in job performance

Company culture, flexibility, and employee expectations have transformed over the past few years. This is especially apparent among Gen Zers entering the workforce with more non-negotiables than their predecessors, including remote work, work-life balance, and salary transparency.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that more than two-thirds of Gen Z respondents and 90% of readers overall consider their mental health an important factor in job performance. Insider encourages employers to take steps to support well-being and maximize employee satisfaction.

In April 2023, Insider unveiled the top 14 HR professionals who are leading through tumultuous times — with a focus on compassion, mental health, and DEI. See who they are and how they’ve made an impact.

As one of our surveyed readers said, “If we haven’t got our health then what do we have?”
